NOTE: All submissions sent prior to the postal rate hike of January 2013 will have their SASE postage supplemented before we mail our response.
Image does not have a formal set of guidelines. We do welcome unsolicited submissions, however, and consider all submissions carefully.
We ask those who wish to submit writing—whether fiction, essay, interview, memoir or poetry—to read the journal and get an idea for the type and range of material we publish. In general, we have a 6,000-word maximum.
We accept simultaneous submissions. No need to update us if work is placed elsewhere.
We welcome queries from writers who want an initial yea or nay on essay topics, interviews with accomplished writers and artists, and other nonfiction pieces.
We no longer accept mailed submissions from visual artists. If you wish to nominate yourself or another visual artist else for consideration of coverage in Image, please send an e-mail to mkenagy@imagejournal.org.
We do not accept electronic submissions. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) so that we can reply to your submission and return your work (if you want it returned). Make sure to include sufficient postage on your SASE. Due to limited staff time and the large number of submissions we receive, we cannot respond by email and submissions that don't include an SASE will not receive a response. Our current response time runs about five months from receipt. Please do not send us the only existing copy of your work. If you're not in the US, the simplest way to obtain US postage for your SASE is through the USPS Click-N-Ship option here, which allows you to print out US postage. Please do not send International Reply Coupons (IRCs) as we cannot use them through our campus mail system.
Upon acceptance, we offer a contract for first serial rights. We do not accept previously published material.
