For over a century, artists have presented themselves as rebellious, prophetic figures, often going to extremes to shock and ridicule. In the process they have often alienated the broader public and become fodder for the "culture wars." And yet, historically, artists have contributed powerful critiques of unjust social practices and the follies and prejudices of their times. So where does the truth lie? How can art be truly prophetic? Can it, indeed (as Flannery O'Connor believed), participate in the ancient prophet's role of calling a people back from decadence to God's ways? Gregory Wolfe will address these questions by examining the work of some striking contemporary visual artists of faith, in this presentation hosted by the Fine Arts Ministry of Queen Anne Lutheran Church.
