Thought about attending the Glen Workshop? Cursed the economic fate that prevented you from going? Thanks to contributions from the following, we are offering several partial scholarships.
Special Note: You do not need to send a $100 deposit to apply for a scholarship. You may apply to any class, even if it's closed for registration (see the course descriptions page). We’ve reserved a limited number of spaces in each class and some housing (triple and double dorm rooms) for scholarship winners, and will do our best to give recipients their first choices.
However, if you wish to guarantee a spot in a workshop, even if you do not win a scholarship, you must register for an available workshop and pay the $100 deposit.
The Paul and Eileen Mariani Fellowship for Poets
One partial scholarship will be awarded to an emerging poet of faith to attend either of the poetry workshops, thanks to The Paul and Eileen Mariani Fellowship for Poets. The fellowship enables one gifted poet to experience the rich fellowship of writers and faculty who gather at the Glen each year and, in the process, develop his or her craft and a deeper understanding of the vocation of a Christian writer. The fellowship honors Paul and Eileen Mariani's ongoing relationship with the Glen community and their passion for encouraging other poets of faith in their craft. In future years, this endowed fellowship will grow into a full scholarship.
Kate Campbell Songwriting Scholarship
One partial scholarship will be awarded to a songwriter, thanks to singer-songwriter Kate Campbell. Kate's music blends a variety of American styles-Gospel, soul, R&B, Celtic music-drawing on her love for community, the traditions of the Baptist church in Mississippi, and on her artistry as a storyteller. She served as Glen musician-in-residence in 2003.
City in Focus Scholarship for Canadians
One partial scholarship including tuition, room and board, and a small book and fee allowance will be awarded to a Canadian artist attending the Glen for the first time, for the class of his or her choice, thanks to City in Focus (Christian Leaders Foundation), of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
CIVA
Several partial scholarships will be awarded to visual artists through Christians in the Visual Arts. CIVA exists to explore and nurture the relationship between the visual arts and the Christian faith; to encourage Christians in the visual arts to develop their particular callings to the highest professional level possible; to foster intelligent understanding, a spirit of trust, and a cooperative relationship between those in the arts, the church, and society; and ultimately, to establish a Christian presence within the secular art world.
Master's Artist
One partial scholarship is available to a writer thanks to a grant from The Master's Artist, a writing collective that keeps up a lively on-line blog of musings, insights and opinions about "striving for excellence" in writing while "glorifying God's kingdom and edifying the Body of Christ."
Don Murdock Scholarship
One partial scholarship will be awarded to a artist or writer, in honor and memory of Don Murdock, former executive director of Laity Lodge. Laity is a retreat center in a river canyon in the hill country of Texas that offers not only rest and an opportunity to reflect on scripture, but retreats that use literature and art as pathways to spiritual growth. Murdock was actively dedicated to reaching out to artists to help enrich the Laity community. We are honored to carry on his work and vision at the Glen Workshop by nurturing an emerging artist in his name.
To apply for a scholarship, send either a manuscript of no more than ten pages in length; slides or good color copies of your visual art; or a CD of three original songs, preferably recent works; plus a cover letter explaining your need, and a completed registration form stating your class and housing preference to:
