Getting Started and What to Bring
Concept:
Think about metaphors or ideas that can be expressed through form and material. Make notes, lists, collect images of sculpture you like, and make sketches.
Construction:
1. Material: Bring a large quantity of two or three construction materials you like – things you have found, collected or purchased (this can mean fabrics, plastics, aluminum sheets, wood pieces, etc. or objects in a quantity like plastic water bottles, roofing shingles, toy boats, electrical wire, etc. It's really unlimited, but be choosy and only bring a good amount of two or three materials that you feel excited about.)
2. Support: Make sketches of forms you might imagine with this material. Does your piece need some kind of armature that will sit on the floor or a table or hang from the wall? Bring what you want to attach the material to. Or do you want to build your form “from the ground up”?
3. Method: Bring (or ship--whatever is less hassle and expense for you) tools and devices for attaching things to each other or to a support such as wire and wire snips, drill, bits, screws or bolts, riveter and rivets, metal shears, aluminum tubes, hack saw, steel rods (not over ¼ diameter), tapes, Velcro, adhesives, wood pieces, jig saw, etc.
4. Scale: How large will it be? Do you plan on discarding it or shipping it or carrying it home after the workshop week?
5. Surface: Do you want to apply paint, textured material or other surface treatments to the form or to sections of the form? Then you will need to bring what you expect you will need like paint, brushes, sandpaper, scissors, glue, epoxy, etc.
