God, by force
by surprise and by appealing to greed,
tries to make the soul
2
eat a pomegranate seed. If the soul
allows but one
expression of consent
3
to be torn from it,
God wins. Simone, who abhors
coercion, in life,
4
in language
does not. When the soul
is given over, entirely,
5
God walks out
and leaves her, abandoned,
solitary.
6
End
of prologue. This is where
the story starts.
Simone Weil, 1909-1943
This poem is forthcoming in V, to be published by Penguin Putnam in the fall of 2002.
