Bret Lott's fiction explores the beauty and dignity of ordinary things and ordinary people. His characters embody the old-fashioned virtues of modesty, hard work, and staying in it for the long haul. In his nonfiction and public addresses, he exhibits a keen and sometimes wicked sense of humor: he is at once a fervent Christian believer and an irreverent critic of the absurdities of modern culture—both inside the church and out.
Publishing fiction since the age of twenty-three, Lott is the author of the story collection The Difference between Women and Men, the essay collection Before We Get Started, and the novels A Song I Knew by Heart, Jewel (an Oprah's Book Club selection), and many others. He received his MFA in fiction from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1984, and from 1986 to 2004 he was writer-in-residence and professor of English at The College of Charleston. In 2004, he took the position of editor and director of the journal The Southern Review at Louisiana State University. He lives in Charleston, South Carolina.
This piece was recorded at the 2008 Glen Workshop.

Every once in awhile I'll watch t.v. to remind me why I don't watch t.v. But, I digress, thank you for showing me the beauty in life.
