THE DISCIPLINE OF INSPIRATION
a seminar with Carey Wallace
We identify artists by their talent. Then we train them in technique. But there’s a third element required: inspiration, the catalyst that lights up talent and technique to make a piece of living art.
Art schools rarely offer training in inspiration. What wisdom we have on it slips through in asides from teachers, or in tricks passed from student to student. But it is possible to think rigorously about inspiration: what it is, where it comes from, and how it operates. And that thought can lay the foundation for a discipline of inspiration that transforms our entire artistic practice.
In this seminar we will study the thoughts of working artists on inspiration, in all genres, through history. Through daily experiments, we’ll learn to recognize, welcome and respond to inspiration. We’ll also develop individual theories of inspiration, and personal disciplines to find more of it in our own artistic practices.
