THE ANGEL IN THE DETAILS:
ATTENTIVENESS AND CRAFT
a fiction workshop with Tara Isabella Burton
How do the smallest details of character and place—the location of a street-sign, how somebody coughs, the family idioms passed down from generation to generation—add color, richness, and emotional truth to a story? In this class, we learn craft not just through writing but also through cultivating our powers of observation and attention: what does it really mean to listen to another person’s story, to watch people in a crowded street, to ask the right questions and know how to interpret the answers? In this class, we’ll be learning to write by learning first how to think, and—no less importantly—how to listen.
