Job Description: Editor in Chief

Image has always been about the present. In its quarterly print journal, events, and programs, Image exists to explore what’s happening now in the world of art and literature—to be alive to all the ways art is engaging with mystery in our time. Image’s 35-year legacy, devoted community, and suite of programs including workshops, online and in-person events, prizes, and fellowships all showcase the continuing vitality and breadth of contemporary art and literature that engage with faith. Our themes are ancient and perennial, but the ways living artists approach those themes are always bringing fresh surprises. It is our mission to reflect and nurture that work.

In 2024 we are establishing a new model for our lead editorship, with a three-year term for the editor in chief (EIC) role.

Position Outline:

The relationship between art and faith is always changing, and the EIC is the person primarily responsible for giving Image’s timeless mission a shape and expression that meet our current moment. By doing this, they’ll leave their personal imprint on the organization in ways both consistent with our legacy and unique to our time.

As the public face of Image’s creative work, the EIC oversees a talented group of section editors who do most of the journal content acquisition. The EIC plays a significant role in guiding editorial content and establishing cohesion among the section editors; and, in collaboration with the publisher, is responsible for the missional integrity of Image. The EIC is a champion of Image’s commitment to aesthetic excellence in contemporary art and literature informed by the Christian tradition. The ideal EIC will also participate enthusiastically at our flagship annual event, the Glen Workshop, as well as the Levertov Award ceremony, Image’s lifetime achievement award.

The EIC also articulates Image’s mission and vision to our community via editorial statements in each issue. The EIC provides guiding language for the staff, editorial team, and board of directors to reflect and articulate Image’s mission and vision in their work. This team-based approach brings Image to a wide array of audiences, cultivating networks that benefit our growing community.

The editor in chief reports directly to the publisher. This part-time position is a three-year term, with the first term beginning in summer 2024 and ending December 31, 2027. This is a remote position with required US travel, including trips to the Glen, Levertov, one board meeting, and a staff retreat each year, and with an expected weekly workload of 5-8 hours.
