The Center Cannot Hold: Poetry & Civilizational Decline
A seminar with J.C. Scharl
An eight-week seminar on poetry and faith
September 9-October 28
Tuesdays 8:30-10 p.m. Eastern
Registration: $195
We are pleased to announce another Image Seminar, an opportunity to engage thoughtfully with meaningful questions on art and faith in a group of like-minded thinkers, guided by faculty who understand the unique impulses and challenges facing people grappling with questions of faith and doubt, life and craft.
From our facilitator, J.C. Scharl:
In the winds of social and political change and cultural upheaval, beauty can seem like a frail reed. But, contrary to what we might expect, poetry and beauty tend to flourish in times of disorder, decline, and even disaster. Join J.C. Scharl as she explores 20th- and 21st-century poetry that dares to assert beauty, order, and abundance in the face of chaos and collapse.
This seminar will take place over eight weekly sessions. Each week, we will explore a different kind of chaos and see how poetry can bring hope.
This seminar is for anyone who's ever looked at the news, talked with a friend, or read a history book and felt the insufficiency of beauty against the weight of evil. It will explore poetry by writers who have no business being joyful, but whose verse is incandescent with the goodness of existence. And hopefully, it will move you to create your own poetry of beauty, order, and abundance.
Participants will experience:
- 90-minute sessions once a week over eight weeks.
- Curated poetry selections from a variety of 20th- and 21st-century poets. Featured selections will be from A Book of Luminous Things by Czeslaw Milosz (not included in the cost of the course) and a packet of public-domain poems curated by J.C. Scharl.
- Thoughtful conversation on chaos, order, hope, and faith.
This workshop is for all those who wish to engage in questions of art and faith. If you are yearning for thoughtful conversation, in-depth questions, and reflections that go beyond easy answers, this seminar is for you.
$195
This four-week seminar will be held on Zoom on Tuesdays and Thursdays from August 29-September 21.
