Poetry

the history of trees opens with a long stretch
of uninteresting happiness. then. we had to grow taller
then but it still wasn’t enough.

*

really we aren’t being funny. our auto reply went something like:
we know this will cause inconvenience and if we come back
we may or may not get back to you

*

how much pretense is too much pretense:
the story of unpeopled history begins with a flash.
a sound. or many other argued possibilities.

you in the tree. me under the tree. it’s rather heartwarming. after
a too-late apology comfort was the only thing on our minds.
like once we knew our dog would die he slept in bed
with us every night.
