Up against the wall, Jacob scrolls under chili-pepper string lights
“Was on a side quest for my grandma
thinking if it does frost over, she’ll be stranded”
At least up, Jacob rubs his eyes
“Does anyone else feel lonely want to die”
“She doesn’t listen to me anyway I stuck the cake in the freezer”
Paper maracas twist on strings

 

 


Jacob Walhout is a PhD student in the poetics program at the University of Buffalo. He holds an MFA in poetry from the University of South Carolina. His work has previously appeared in Meridian, Great Lakes Review, Ekstasis, The Cresset, and elsewhere.
